Remember when I went over the website of the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ? They’re back at it with some extremely overpriced but well maintained time capsules of normal cars.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Except this time, it’s a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . A 2003 to be exact. However, no one will pay as much for this tracker as a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
Seriously, this:
Costs $500 less than this and has 50,000 more miles. Nope. CP. Hard CP.
Let’s take a closer look at that 2003 Tracker. It’s a yellow manual two door hard top which, although surprisingly immaculate, is NOT a low mileage Toyota truck.
It is a low trim four cylinder with crank windows and cloth seats. The original factory floor mats seem to be in surprisingly good shape. Overall the interior is in excellent condition, but it is not a Toyota truck. It certainly cannot command $10,000 anytime soon.
Specifically, it is not this Toyota truck.
The asking price on this lightly and tastefully modified low mileage 1985 is $10,500, which is surprisingly reasonable, especially given the Toyota truck price bubble.
How reasonable? It doesn’t have 353,000 miles, it has 53,000 miles.
I wonder if that paint is original. It certainly looks to be in fine shape. The interior appears to have custom upholstery and the rubber floor mats seem suspiciously shiny. It appears to be a much nicer place to spend time than most trucks its age.
I definitely know which one I would be driving home in. How much would have to come off the asking price before you would end up in the Tracker?

I don’t share the hate that a lot of people do for the Grand Vitara Tracker and I generally love yellow cars, but man the Chevy face and that color are doing that thing no favors. Just an ugly face.
Edit: And to answer your question, it would make a fun little offroad rig and for that I’d be prepared to spend up to... $3,500?
![]() 07/08/2020 at 10:45 |

There are very few cars that are truly hate worthy at a low enough price. This will make someone very happy, but yeah the Chevy front never worked on this car. It would take the right buyer at half that.

Funny enough I have enough cars that even a low price doesn’t tempt me anymore. Cars need to earn a place in the driveway and that Tracker just isn’t doing it. Kinda cool as it is manual, 4WD, and has a solid rear axle, but at that price is certainly a hard no.
I couldn’t figure out what offended me about the front of it until I looked back at George’s from the AlCan road trip. His was white, which helped, but more importantly had a body colored grill, which seems less... bad.
I’d be interested in seeing what the yellow one
would look like with a body color or black grill, but couldn’t be bothered to photoshop it.

Yeah I 3-4K would be a very reasonable price ran for it. Even then like who wants a tracker that bad?
![]() 07/08/2020 at 11:03 |

The problem with this one is it is too nice to trash off-road and too bad to drive on the road as well as being too expensive to sell. The front, IDK it just looks it is is pursing its lips which is not a good look.
When manual Versas are worth $500, even they could earn a place as a car you literally do not care about whatsoever and therefore can do anything and everything to. Spray paint it pink, run it in a banger race, do whatever.

Ugh I have too much mechanical sympathy to do that.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 11:23 |

To be honest, so do I. Someone would though and I wouldn't be sad about it.

If they threw in a dual 12" cerwin Vega subwoofer box in the back and some choice 90s hip hop CDs with a Kenwood 'head unit' then.....maybe....
![]() 07/08/2020 at 11:26 |

You just said it. "Who" wants a Tracker that bad. Except I don't.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 11:26 |

You mean maybe for $5,000.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 12:06 |

I like the Tracker more than I should, and that yellow color is awesome, but it’s not worth $10k lol
Maybe $3000, possibly 4k
![]() 07/08/2020 at 12:10 |

4k to the right buyer carrying a torch for the 2000s. 10k is not just a CP, but more of a crack den and everyone inside.

I am very suspicious of the T oyota paint color, and I suspect it isn’t original.
Those LED headlights also rub me the wrong way.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 13:30 |
|
I saw those. I suspect it might be a very thorough respray but the engine bay and sills and everything is the same color. Whatever the case, it seems as though someone really liked it. Seems like a good price considering.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 13:36 |
|
I don’t seem to recall that color being of the period. Could be wrong, but with all of the other work done, I could see it being a repaint. I get the feeling that truck was someone’s baby, and they “restored” it.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 13:47 |
|
But unless they messed with the odometer, it is still a 52,000 mile Toyota truck with the factory engine and seemingly no performance mods. I do agree with you that it seems have been lightly resto modded but it is a pretty compelling vehicle for a lot of people. Certainly you can’t find one with less than 20 0,000 miles on it for all that close of a price.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 13:53 |

Runners for $500 are one thing, but I find if I have to put any work into a car beyond like an oil change, I get too attached. I thought hard about RallyXing the 850, but I put so much work into it just to get it to a point that it would pass tech, that now I’m attached and couldn’t bring myself to beat on it like that.
Well, unless nobody buys it. Then it might get sent .
![]() 07/08/2020 at 13:54 |

I wonder if it sat outside in the harsh southeast climate, and the paint/interior perished. If it checked out, it could be a useful little hauler for someone. I checked out the ad, the seller admits to it being a repaint/restomod - he’s probably just trying to get his money back.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 14:10 |

This is the place that sells geriatric owned estate sale deals for 5 00% mark ups. They didn't put a dime into it other than an impressive cleaning.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 14:11 |
|
Someone had it repainted/reupholstered anyway.
Do people actually buy their stuff? Seems like a lot of it sits around for a long time.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 14:13 |
|
I don’t know. The hard gray plastic interior of a Versa might induce enough rage. Some people are more willing than others to watch the world burn though.
Side note: you really missed out by buying a Cruze with the all black interior. The two tone black and tan is just wonderful and has saved my butt o n hot days.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 14:15 |
|
You can afford to sit on some stuff at those ludicrous prices.
Yes, it was clearly repainted and given custom upholstery. Almost seems like a show truck but it isn't quite over the top enough plus stock engine. The low miles make it all the more confusing unless the odo got tampered with during the engine out resto modding.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 14:18 |

I guess if you sell just a few, the profits make up for it.
I was thinking the same. It is very easy to change a mechanical odometer, or even switch one out of another vehicle. Maybe at half his price, it is doable.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 14:23 |
|
It is a 2wd so I think given the condition 6 or 7k is reasonable. Try finding any for sale that aren't close to 300k miles.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 14:27 |
|
It could still provide a long life of reliable service, you just gotta find the right buyer. Hell, my brother would like it, but he’d pay 5K tops for it - decent ones of that generation aren’t rare here. Nobody is laying down that money for that one when the same would get them something 2o years newer.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 15:34 |

Still less of a CP than that Tracker. The low miles and somewhat tasteful mods would definitely appeal to someone for a little less than that. Like everything they sell, not quite there for me.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 16:06 |
|
I think he confuses Tracker with 4Runner or something.
But like you hinted at, his prices are high enough where he can sell at a low volume and still get by. He must have an in with local probate lawyers or similar.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 16:07 |
|
I believe so. The dealer either frequents estate sales or has a flat fee arrangement with the lawyers or both. Their website is worth a look.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 16:43 |

I see they still have the Tempo, and a pristine facelift ovoid Taurus, both of which are hard to find not ruined.
Estate sales can be interesting. A few months ago there was an 04 Grand Marquis in an estate sale, one owner, 70 K, all records from day one , pristine, as-new, even the tires. A hard loaded retail car with leather, handling package, digital dash, apparently a grail among Panthers of the era. I probably could have got it for $4500 or so, maybe should have.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 16:59 |

Unless you are Nibby or Ford Tempo Fanatic, there is no reason to want to find those cars not ruined.
Grand Marquis are deeply uncool to most people. I am not in the market for a pristine one but I at least see the appeal.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 17:09 |
|
Some people have weird tastes. Someone out there would love that Tempo, but for half the price.
That Grand Marquis was a lot of car for the money. Around here anyway, things seem to get sketchy fast when you go under 5K. A mint maintained lowish miles one has years of service ahead of it, if you care for it. I’m not itching to buy one either, but one can do a lot worse.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 17:11 |

This place would have been selling that Mercury for $12,000. I don't know how they sell enough to remain open even at those margins. There is a loon for every lake I guess.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 17:46 |

No way that paint is original, it’s pretty new , looks modern and fresh. B ack then the a Toyota truck would never had any mica in the paint, that paint has a bunch.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 17:54 |
|
Depending on the owner, that collection might end up in an estate sale someday, as much of it seems to move a bit slowly.
Maybe he does so much business with mainstream cars (I see a lot of ordinary material there, too) that it keeps the lights on, maybe he already has money and it is just a hobby, something like that.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 17:59 |
|
Yes, looks like an expensive engine out custom job. Surprising, but maybe adds some appeal within that price.
![]() 07/08/2020 at 18:05 |

Oh I bet it’s a bargain when you see what they spent on it. I hate the piping on the seat, it would have to go. But it’s a nice small truck, it will last forever too.
![]() 07/09/2020 at 09:05 |

As someone who just went through the tracker shopping process you're both right and kind of wrong. This will sell for 6 to 7 k. The older samurai are getting harder to find so people are turning to newer vehicles. Plus these can easily keep up with traffic. Also roll up windows and original paint? Sign me up!

I didn’t even know Chevy made a version of the Geo Tracker... I like the Geo, but that Chevy version is hideous! Three grand, final offer.
![]() 07/10/2020 at 09:16 |
|
They aren't very pretty. Someone had to sell all those Geo designs with life still left in them. They probably bought it for less than $2,000 but this place somehow survives by putting absolutely insane 300% or more markups on low volume estate sale bought cars.
![]() 07/10/2020 at 14:15 |

I guess it’s that whole “Why does one apple cost $1,000,000?” “Because that way I only need to sell one!” thing.
![]() 07/10/2020 at 14:36 |
|
It just matters how much you make, not how much you sell. Still, I think they could make more with less insane markups.
